“Faced with overcrowding, insufficient on-call accommodations and a lack of support amenities, the RCFD worked with Chamberlin Architects to assess the cost and operational impacts of new construction versus renovation at the existing site.”

Fire Station #1 in Rapid City, SD was constructed in 1975 to respond to the growing needs of the downtown area. In the intervening 35 years, the station has increased in call volume exponentially, outgrowing its on-duty staff and administrative capacity.

Faced with overcrowding, insufficient on-call accommodations and a lack of support amenities, the RCFD worked with Chamberlin Architects to assess the cost and operational impacts of new construction versus renovation at the existing site.

After a thorough site, structure and program assessment, plans were developed for a multi-level addition and extensive renovation of the existing facility allowing on-duty staff to remain on site throughout the project.

The 20,000 sf addition and 20,000 sf remodel expanded administrative space while providing better on-duty accommodations with expanded training rooms, a fitness center and up-to-date response team support spaces.
